Sheridan Wahl, a Florida woman who went missing on Sept. 19, is dead. Now friends and family are trying to understand what happened to the 21-year-old from Tampa, Fl.
Wahl was headed for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina last Sunday to visit her father. According to a report by Fox Carolina, she never got there.
The following day, Sheridan Wahl’s mother, Kelly DeArment Wahl, pleaded for help on her Facebook page.
“She could have been driving back from Myrtle Beach to Tampa. Let me know if anyone has seen her. Otherwise please pray she comes home to us safely.”
Sheridan Wahl GoFundMe Page
Family and friends naturally were concerned about what happened. One friend, her roommate, Elizabeth Echenique, established a GoFundMe page.
Echenique’s GoFundMe outlines the elements in the mystery of Wahl’s disappearance.
Around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sheridan Wahl and her mother were in contact on Facetime. Sheridan was at that time in the 300 block of South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and she was trying to rent a scooter.
She had difficulty renting the scooter because she entered the shop without shoes on. So she told her mother that she would be returning home.
Her mother advised her to stay the night, in order to avoid the long drive back to Tampa,Florida.
Sheridan Wahl’s Car
After that conversation, subsequent efforts to reach her by phone went to her voice mail. Her family never heard from her again.
The following day her car, a burgundy colored Toyota Corrola, was found abandoned. The GoFundMe refers to unspecified witnesses said said “they saw a white male driving/fleeing the scene.”
At some point, the car was torched. Deputies responded to reports of a vehicle fire on Keith Lane (off the E. Myrtle Beach highway) in the Scranton section of Florence County around 2 p.m., according to an incident report.
Employees at the scooter rental shop say that some time after she left there, her father came by to inquire about her.
Her body was discovered the next morning, Tuesday, Sept. 21, on Highway 378 in the Hanna-Salem area of southern Florence County, 10 miles away from the body. It had been dumped behind a rural fire station.
The fire station has been described as a small metal shed with three garages.
Sheridan Wahl Memorial Plans
Her mother has since updated the Facebook entry expressing her grief that her daughter has passed, adding: “[T]he family graciously requests that their privacy be respected and deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support from all.”
The Daily Beast said on Sunday, Sept. 26, that an autopsy is underway. No cause of death has been made public.
Sheridan Wahl was studying marketing at the University of South Florida. Echenique was her roommate there.
On the GoFundMe page, Echenique described Wahl as having a “heart of gold” and as being a lover of music. The page was set up so that the family can arrange a memorial and funeral “for the beautiful soul that has gone too soon.” The goal is $20,000.
“She was an amazing musician and many times would sit down to make music for fun and relaxation alone and with friends.”
There will no doubt be efforts to lump this together with the much-discussed case of Gabby Petito, who shared at least a residence in the state of Florida with Sheridan Wahl.
But at this point, there is no suspect, not even a “person of interest,” in the matter of Sheridan Wahl. Nor is there a cause of death.
The two stories may be far different. Both investigations are ongoing.
