Skilyr Hicks was found dead at a friend’s house in Liberty, S.C. The former America’s Got Talent contestant was just 23 years old at the time of her death. Police are investigating her death. An official cause of death has not been determined.
Chief Deputy Chad Brooks from Pickens County Sheriff’s Office believes that the young girl died from a drug overdose. Her mother, Jodi, told TMZ that her daughter had a history of mental health issues, such as depression, and a substance abuse problem. Brooks confirmed that drugs and paraphernalia were found in the area of the body.
According to police reports, the 23-year-old was found in the home’s bathroom and later pronounced dead on the scene.
Police reports from 2017 and 2018, showed that the young girl had previously been arrested for underage drinking and intoxication. In 2018 she was charged with a misdemeanor for underage consumption and in April 2017, she was charged with domestic violence after she got into a fight with three family members while drunk.
The AGT contestant is survived by her mother and four siblings, along with thousands of fans who followed her stardom on America’s Got Talent.
Breelyn Hicks, Skilyr’s sister, took to Facebook to mourn the 23-year-old’s death. She wrote a heartfelt message to her sister and said, “My super beautiful, extremely talented, hilarious, free spirit of a sister left this world to be with Jesus. I can’t possibly put into words how broken-hearted I am. I will miss her like crazy. I’ll miss her voice, her long warm hugs, her constantly making jokes using puns. Her ability to create music that inspired thousands of people. She had so much life left to live. Skilyr, I don’t know how I’ll be able to live without you.”
Skilyr Hicks performed on the 2013 season of AGT when she was just 14 years old. The young girl performed for Heidi Klum, Howard Stern, Mel B. and Howie Mandel. She touched the judges with her amazing talent and emotional backstory.
The 14-year-old performed an original song called Brand New Day and revealed that she had taught herself guitar while dealing with the death of her father a couple years prior. Skilyr said, “A few years ago, my dad passed away and that was a really difficult time for me. Music helped me let out all of the emotion that was building up inside of me. Music has brought me through a lot of difficulties in life and now it’s bringing me toward my dream.”
With four yeses from the judges, Skilyr Hicks was able to make it to the second round of competition but was sadly eliminated before the live show in New York City. During her performance, Howie Mandel told her that she was inspiring a nation with her music.
Mel B later criticized the singer for looking terrified on stage and appearing to not have any fun. After her time on AGT, Skilyr continued to play music, and her social media pages are filled with videos of herself playing the guitar. The young girl would sit on street corners and play for people walking by.
She would also play with her family. Many of the videos on her Facebook page show the 23-year-old singing with her siblings.
After her daughter died, her mother said, “She will live on through her music.”
Police continue to investigate the young girl’s death and hope to find a cause of death so her family can have some closure.
