Three people are dead and three more were injured in a shooting early morning Sunday at The Somers House tavern in Kenosha, Wis. Police are still searching for a motive and are working to identify the victims.
A suspect was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon for the shooting that occurred around 12:40 a.m. Sheriff David G. Beth spoke about the incident saying that “it sounds like one person got removed from the establishment and possibly came back a short time later.”
CNN reported that the shooter left Somers House tavern after an alleged altercation and came back later with a gun. “We don’t believe this was a random act,” the sheriff explained. “I don’t believe that the people in this area are in harm’s way because of the suspect still not being captured,” the sheriff said before the suspect was put in custody.
“We believe our suspect knew who he was targeting,” Beth said at a news conference early Sunday, according to NBC News. Those victims, “names, ages, and cities of residence … are still being determined.”
Video shot by a bystander depicted “a chaotic scene,” according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
One of the men who died got into a car after he was shot. Another patron of the bar drove him to a hospital. But the victim died before arriving at the destination, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The Wisconsin bar was popular among Carthage College students, whose campus is less than half a mile down the road. That road has been closed since the incident occurred.
Now 100 officers from multiple agencies “are scouring the area trying to come up with any video footage and anything that can help us at the scene right now,” Sheriff David Beth said.
Pat Jager, who rents garage space across the street, said none of this was typical for the neighborhood. “If you’re going to fight, fight with fists like the old school way,” he told Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Kenosha shooting marks the 47th mass shooting since March 16, when eight individuals were killed at three Atlanta-area spas. It also comes only days after Brandon Scott Hole killed eight individuals at a FedEx facility. There has been no motive identified for the Indianapolis shooting.
