Sophia Cheung, a daredevil Instagram influencer, died Saturday when she slipped and fell taking a fearless waterfall selfie. The Hong Kong social media star is known for snapping sexy photos in dangerous places. But her last picture ended tragically when she plummeted to her death.
Sophia Cheung, who also goes by Sofia, was hiking with her three friends to Ha Pak Lai park late Saturday morning. The fearless influencer wanted to take some selfies at the edge of a waterfall, which is a beautiful locale at the park’s Pineapple Mountain site.
Though it’s a prime destination for hikers looking for a romantic sunset view, the edge is a dangerous spot for taking photos. While Cheung was trying to obtain impressive content, the Instagram model lost her footing and fell into the 16-foot pool below. Cheung’s three friends quickly called for help, and emergency services were swift to arrive on the scene.
Sophia Cheung was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. It’s unclear what specific injuries the model sustained, and police have not released information regarding her cause of death. It is speculated that the impact from the drop into the 16-foot pool is what ended her life.
Cheung was an up-and-coming Instagram influencer, who used her adventurous nature to score an explosive 6,000 followers within a few months. In her bio, Sophia Cheung described herself as an explorer, who loved hiking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. She concluded her bio with the phrase, “life should be fun not dumb,” which was the motto that inspired most of her Instagram content.
Dozens of photos on her feed showed off Cheung’s fearless nature, with images of the model hanging off cliffs and sitting on ledges at dangerous heights. Usually scantily clad, Sophia Cheung was also hailed as a beauty. But some fans worried she was taking too many risks.
In her most recent Instagram post, dated July 9, the model is kneeling on the beach holding a Radbug boogie board. Captioned in the post, Cheung notes that “better days are coming. They are called: Saturday and Sunday.” The chilling sentiment is particularly haunting because it was one day later, on July 10, that Cheung’s adventures cost her her life.
Beneath the post, Cheung’s fans grieve, with one follower pointing out: “I thought better days are coming.” The fan continued, explaining that they are going to miss “[Sophie’s] chat every day. I love you always, rest in peace pretty Sofi.” Dozens of other fans used the comment section to express their sadness at the news, many of whom wrote “RIP” beneath the beach photo.
Other commenters made sure to spread the love, with one saying “Rip Sophie! I can’t believe last week I still chat with you.”
Another commenter wrote: “Deepest condolences to your family and loved ones, RIP.” The three friends Sophia Cheung was with before she died have not been named, though she has been pictured many times with women in dangerous destinations.
