The Plymouth shooting, which occurred on Thursday, August 12, is the first mass shooting in the U.K. since 2010. Jake Davison, an alleged “Incel” with a popular YouTube channel, killed a woman in her home before exiting the house and opening fire on four other people. The 3-year-old girl, identified as Sophia Martyn, was fatally struck during the incident, and her adopted father, Lee Martyn was killed trying in vain to shield her from the bullets.
According to authorities, all of the victims identified lived in the Keyham area. The 22-year-old gunman killed a total of five people before turning the pump-action shotgun on himself in a nearby park. During Thursday’s horrific attack, witnesses say Davison exited a home and walked down the street. The 3-year-old girl and her dad were walking peacefully down the street before the carnage continued.
“There was no noise or screaming, they were just running,” a witness explained, speaking about Sophie Martyn and Lee Martyn. “This bloke with the gun stopped about 15-feet from them, raised his gun to his shoulder, and shot the man in the back.”
The witness continued, saying that Lee Martyn “fell on to his daughter, protecting her even though he may have been dying.” Davison then “walked up and stood over them and fired from inches away to finish them off.”
According to reports, Martyn and his wife adopted Sophie Martyn when she was an infant. Both victims were taken to Derriford hospital for treatment, but their condition was too critical and the wounds were too severe.
Jake Davison first opened fire in a home on Biddick Drive in Keyham killing 51-year-old Maxine Chapman. Officials first claimed that there was “a familiar relationship,” but they later confirmed it was Davison’s mother.
Police Chief Shaun Sawyer said that police “believe we have an incident that is domestically related that has spilled into the streets and seen several people within Plymouth losing their lives in an extraordinarily tragic circumstance.”
Davison then exited the home where he continued the go down the street. He killed the 3-year-old girl and her father, as well as 59-year-old Stephen Washington, who was out walking his dog. Davison also shot and killed 66-year-old Kate Shepherd, a retired mom. Shepherd was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died of her injuries.
“My mom lost her world,” Stephen Washington’s son said in a tribute statement. “My kids and brothers and sister’s kids lost their granddad. Each and every one of us will miss him deeply, RIP dad you will be missed, love you.”
There were two more victims in the Plymouth shooting. A 53-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were also shot and were taken to the hospital. They are expected to survive, authorities said. Police did not identify them by name.
Police reported that Jake Davison’s shooting spree lasted a total of six minutes before he killed himself in a nearby park. Police were reportedly en route and were attempting to tackle him when he took his own life.
No motive has been identified. The community mourns those lost and is trying to rebuild the broken pieces after the senseless killing. It was pointed out that Davison had a strong social media presence and that his posts showcased a troubled young man. He was a misogynist, an investigation revealed.
There was a vigil held on Friday to honor the victims of the mass shooting. The community honored Sophie Martyn, Lee Martyn, and the three other victims who died in the senseless attack. People laid flowers and held candles in North Down Crescent Park in Keyham, reports said.
The Plymouth shooting is the worst mass shooting in the U.K. since 2010 because of the country’s strict gun control laws. Few people own guns and fewer carry them, including police officers. Jake Davison reportedly had a license for his pump-action shotgun.
