Alex Murdaugh, a prominent South Carolina lawyer, was kicked out of his family’s law firm and accused of stealing funds just a day before he called 911 and told police that he was shot at on the side of the road. Murdaugh, who has experienced a series of bizarre tragedies in the last couple of months, entered rehab following the shooting.
Alex Murdaugh worked at PMPED (Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick) which was started by his great-grandfather, Randolph Murdaugh Sr. nearly 100 years ago. The Murdaughs are a prominent family in South Carolina and three generations of Murdaugh men have held the top prosecutor position for the Lowcountry region of South Carolina.
The firm released a statement following the removal of Alex Murdaugh from the company. They said, “(Alex Murdaugh) is no longer associated with PMPED in any manner. His resignation came after the discovery by PMPED that Alex misappropriated funds in violation of PMPED standards and policies. A forensic accounting firm will be retained to conduct a thorough investigation. This is disappointing news for all of us.” The statement continued: “Rest assured that our firm will deal with this in a straightforward manner.”
It is unclear how much money the South Carolina lawyer is accused of stealing, but a source close to the law firm said that it was in the millions. Police and the South Carolina Bar Association have been notified of the alleged misappropriation of funds and an investigation is in place.
On Saturday, Murdaugh called 911 and told dispatchers that he had been shot at while trying to change a tire in Hampton County, S.C. According to Murdaugh and his lawyer, a truck drove by the 54-year-old while he was changing a tire and then turned back around before firing a shot.
Murdaugh was taken to a Georgia hospital and treated for a superficial gunshot wound to the side of his head. He is expected to recover.
Following the shooting, the South Carolina lawyer issued a strange statement to the public and supposedly resigned from his position at the family firm.
“The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life. I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret,” said Murdaugh. “I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders. I am immensely sorry to everyone I’ve hurt including my family, friends, and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.”
South Carolina police are investigating whether the shooting and the murders of Alex’s wife and son are connected.
Three months ago, Murdaugh’s wife and son – Maggie and Paul – were found dead at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, S.C. It was the South Carolina lawyer who found the bodies and according to his 911 call, Murdaugh said “It’s bad,” and “Nobody’s breathing.”
Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were had multiple gunshot wounds. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) started the investigation. No suspects have been arrested.
At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was being investigated for his role in a 2019 boat crash that killed a 19-year-old university student. Mallory Beach was thrown from the boat when it crashed. Her body was found in the water a week later. Paul was driving the boat at the time According to the investigation, he was under the influence of alcohol.
The Murdaugh family was allegedly unhelpful when it came to the police investigation about Paul’s involvement. Alex Murdaugh and his father, the late Randolph Murdaugh III, allegedly prevented law enforcement officers from talking to witnesses of the crash when they were in the hospital.
Paul was facing three charges related to the boat crash at the time of his death. Those charges have since been dropped following his murder, but other members of the Murdaugh family are still facing a wrongful death civil suit that was filed by Mallory Beach’s mother.
