Tylan Kiere Jones remained in Blount County Jail Friday after he was arrested for allegedly abusing his ex-girlfriend. The UAB football player, who was a defensive lineman for the Blazers, was booked Wednesday night on a third-degree domestic violence charge – a misdemeanor in Alabama.
Jones, who lives in Birmingham, AL, has not made bail yet, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound football player was accused of choking, beating, and smothering his ex-girlfriend. Tylan Kiere Jones also reportedly threatened to kill the unidentified victim if she told authorities.
The Mississippi native and his ex-girlfriend had been together for four months, authorities said. Over the past month, the 21-year-old UAB football player allegedly abused her in a variety of ways, including hitting her and tossing her on the floor. He also reportedly kicked her in the head while wearing boots.
The unnamed woman finally reported the incidents to police, obtaining a temporary protection from abuse order against him on Wednesday. In her report, the woman accused Tylan Kiere Jones of smothering her with a pillow and beating their dogs until the animals couldn’t move.
In one incident, Jones allegedly threw a kitchen knife at his former flame. The blade lodged into the woman’s left leg and when Jones removed it, he continued to threaten her with the weapon.
According to the police report, Tylan Kiere Jones “pulled the knife out and told [the woman] he would kill her if she told the police. She states she is in fear of her life.” The report revealed that the woman needed eight stitches in her left leg to close up the knife wound.
Tylan Kiere Jones remained in jail Friday. His bond has not yet been set. A hearing was scheduled for late September, though the exact date has not been revealed.
According to his Blazers bio, Jones was a redshirt junior and played in two games last season. He made one tackle. Tylan Jones signed with the University of Alabama at Birmingham after studying at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His bio stated that he attended Lake Cormorant High School, though it did not indicate whether he played football for the school.
Though Tylan Kiere Jones is still listed on the Blazers’ roster, a UAB spokesman explained in a statement that the University of Alabama at Birmingham was aware of the lineman’s arrest. Jones has since been suspected from the team while authorities conduct their investigation. It wasn’t immediately clear if Jones would return to the school if the charges were dropped.
Ted Feeley, the associate director of communications at UAB, said that the school takes “this news extremely seriously.” He claimed that “we will look into it and take any appropriate action that may be necessary.”
Feeley explained that Tylan Jones was not set to play in any games this season because he had broken his foot during fall camp.
The Blazers are currently 1-0 and are scheduled to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in Athens. The Bulldogs are ranked second, according to college football rankings. The Blazers previously took on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Sept. 1. The Blazers scored 31 points while the Gamecocks left the field with zero.
