A birthday party shooting in Colorado Springs left six people and the gunman dead. Authorities received the call early Sunday morning around 12:20 a.m. and found the victims in Canterbury Mobile Home Park. Now neighbors, family and friends are wondering what happened.
According to the police department’s press release, “Through an initial analysis of evidence and preliminary interviews, it appears that a birthday party was being held at the trailer in the 2800 block of Preakness Way for one of the victims. Friends, family, and children were gathered inside the trailer to celebrate when the shooting occurred.”
No children were hurt during the shooting, and are currently staying with relatives as they try to process what happened.
From what investigators have gathered, the shooter drove to the 2800 block of Preakness Way in Canterbury Mobile Home Park early Sunday morning, where he entered the residence and began to shoot people. The attack ended with the man taking his own life beside the six people he killed.
The motive behind the murder-suicide is currently unknown, but there is speculation that the kills were personal.
The birthday party was thrown for Nubia Marquez, 28, her brother Melvin Perez, and their mother, Joana Cruz. Nubia and her husband, Freddy Marquez, survived the shooting by leaving the party at 10 p.m., which was being hosted at her mother’s mobile home.
The couple identified the victims as Melvin Perez, 30; Joana Cruz, 53; Jose Guttierez, 21; Melvin Perez’s wife, Mayra Perez, 32; and Mayra Perez’s sister Sandra Ibarra and brother Jose Ibarra.
According to Freddy Marquez, the shooter was Sandra Ibarra’s boyfriend. Marquez described the suspect as “serious” and someone who always carried a gun.
In a statement on Mother’s Day, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called the mass murder a “terrible act of violence,” occurring as “many of us are spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today.”
This shooting comes just two months after the Boulder Shooting, where a shooter killed 10 innocent people and a police officer at a Colorado grocery store. The governor jumped into action by signing two gun laws that require people to secure their firearms when they’re not in use and report any lost or stolen firearms to authorities within five days of it occurring. Unfortunately, these regulations did not stop Sunday’s attack.
Over the weekend, there were at least eight other mass shootings across the United States. While the birthday party yielded the most deaths, the other attacks left many injured among the dead. The shooting in Times Square left a 4-year-old girl injured.
Andrew Yang has used this tragedy to discuss what defunding the police would really mean and if it would actually help the incessant shootings in America. “Nothing works in our city without public safety, and for public safety we need the police,” Yang said.
Opinions on how to curb the gun-related deaths in the country vary, but the police department in Colorado remains stoic when remembering the tragedy they just witnessed. “Today, we find ourselves mourning the loss of lives and praying solemnly for those who were injured and those who lost family members in a senseless act of violence on Sunday morning,” The department said following the homicide. “We think too of the emergency personnel who responded to a horrific scene, and we keep them in our prayers today.”
