Lina Sadar Khil, a 3-year-old Texas girl, went missing from a San Antonio playground on Monday, according to local reports.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference Tuesday that Khil was playing in the park at her apartment complex when her mother lost track of her on Monday evening.
The chief said it’s unclear whether the missing child wandered away from the playground or was taken, but authorities were concentrating their search efforts on the apartment complex and its immediate surroundings as of Tuesday night, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Lina is described as 4 feet tall, weighing 55 pounds with straight, brown hair about shoulder length. She was last seen wearing a red dress with black shoes and a black jacket.
Lina Sadar Khil, 3, Missing in Texas
According to police accounts and media reports, Lina Sadar Khil — whose name has also been printed as Lina Sardar Khil — was playing at a park in the Villas Del Cabo apartments at 9400 Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio under her mother’s supervision around 4 or 5 p.m. on Monday night.
Chief McManus told reporters her mother had briefly walked away, and that Lina was gone when she returned.
Her parents reported her missing at around 7 p.m., police said. The Texas Department of Public Safety issued an Amber Alert for Lina Tuesday morning.
Authorities cordoned off the complex and told reporters they planned to search all 300 units on the property for the child. Complex residents were being searched as they came and went, and teams were checking dumpsters and other small spaces for the child well into the evening, local outlets wrote.
“We aren’t giving up. We don’t end the search at the end of shift,” McManus said. “We are here until we find her.” The chief added that his department has contacted the FBI for assistance.
“We will continue this until, hopefully, we find Lina, but we are not stopping,” he continued. “This will be continuous. We’ve got a command line set up and we’re continuing to do this for the long haul if that’s necessary.”
While the exact circumstances of Lina’ disappearance remain unclear, the Amber Alert reported her as “abducted,” and San Antonio police told ABC News they have no reason to believe she’s with a family member or someone she may know. The department has also said they suspect she may be in “grave, immediate danger.”
Family of Missing Child is Distraught
Riaz Sadar Khil, Lina’s father, told a local news station Tuesday through a translator that he and his wife “have not slept at all” since their daughter went missing the night before.
“During our entire lives we have not been as saddened as we were yesterday and today,” he said.
Riaz said Lina’s mother was watching her at the park when the 3-year-old dashed off the playground toward a nearby trail and suddenly vanished. He said his wife originally thought Lina might have returned to their apartment but began to panic when she got home and the child wasn’t there.
Both parents have given statements to San Antonio police and federal investigators, their translator said.
Lina’s parents, according to KENS5, believe she was abducted, though police have not said they’re investigating the case as a kidnapping.
According to media reports, the Khils are members of San Antonio’s Afghan refugee community and have lived in the U.S. since 2019.
