Zen Cannon, the 5-month-old son of Nick Cannon, died during Thanksgiving weekend. The rapper shared the news on the Dec. 7 episode of The Nick Cannon Show and broke down when he talked about his baby. According to Cannon, the 5-month-old died from brain cancer, which they noticed soon after his birth.

“I always noticed he had a cough and so I wanted to check it out,” he said. “He had this interesting breathing and by the time he was two months I noticed he had this nice sized head too — a Cannon head. We didn’t think anything of it. But I wanted to take him to the doctor for his sinus and breathing. We thought it would be routine.”

The cough and sinus problems turned out to be fluid building up in the infant’s brain from a malignant tumor. The doctors diagnosed Zen Cannon with hydrocephalus, which is a form of cancer that causes increased fluid in the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain.

According to Nick Cannon, the doctors tried to fix the problem by operating on the little boy and placing a shunt in his head. The shunt allowed the fluid to drain. After his operation, the little boy had energy to play with his siblings, and his mom and dad hoped everything would be OK.

Nick, who had the son with Alyssa Scott, thought that everything was going to be fine. But then Zen’s health got worse during the holidays, and the rapper decided to fly out and be with his son. The family spent their last day together on the beach. Nick told his fans that it was a very special moment for him.

He said, “I wanted to make sure that I allowed the sun to rise and… hold my son… for the last time.”

After their time together at the beach, Nick tried to go back to New York to finish the taping of his show, but on his way to the airport he got the heartbreaking call that he needed to come back. Zen passed away soon after.

During an emotional live show, Nick explained that he didn’t cancel his show because he wanted the episode to be a tribute to his son. He said,”[God] puts the most and heaviest weight on the shoulders of his strongest soldiers, so I’m here to show that I can fight through this. I’m feeling it, I’m vulnerable, I’m open, but I’m going to make it through. This is a special show dedicated to my beautiful son Z.

Nick even showed a picture of his smiling baby boy with his viewers.

Many of the employees of Nick’s show were surprised at his heartbreaking and emotional speech. Most of them didn’t know that Zen had passed away and didn’t know what Nick was planning on talking about when he scheduled his live show.

A source close to the production team released a statement and said, “the crew and studio audience were all shocked by the devastating news.” The source continued and said that all of them were “unaware of the tragic and extremely personal announcement Nick was going to make about the loss of his youngest child, Zen, during the live show this morning.”

A different source later told outlets that Nick Cannon will be taking a break from his talk show so that he can grieve the loss of his son.

Zen Cannon was Nick’s youngest child. He was born in July 2021. The rapper has six other children, including twins Monroe and Moroccan with ex-wife Mariah Carey, son Golden and daughter Powerful Queen whom he shares with Brittany Beland and twins Zion and Zillion with Abby de la Rosa.
