As 15 alleged children of late rapper DMX fight over his estate, many people are wondering what his net worth is. Over the years, the rapper suffered a lot of financial hardship. So he may not have had as much money as fans think.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, DMX was worth negative $1 million at the time of his death. The rapper filed for bankruptcy back in 2013 and even spent one year in prison for tax fraud. Here is everything we know about the late rapper’s net worth.
Known for his songs like …And Then There Was X and Party Up (Up in Here) the late rapper quickly rose through the ’90’s rap charts. But that success didn’t come without some financial struggles.
In 2013, when DMX filed for bankruptcy, the rapper said that he had $50,000 in assets but between $1 million and $10 million in debt. A lawyer for DMX said that the debt had prevented him from getting a passport and being able to travel outside of the country where he still had a large fan base. The Manhattan court denied his claim to bankruptcy.
The rapper also listed missed child support payments as his major cause of debt. At the time, DMX owed over $1.24 million in child support. Reports say that the rapper has 15 alleged children, and they are all arriving to fight for a portion of his estate.
In 2017, the rapper’s money problems got worse. He was found guilty of 14 counts of tax fraud. Those 14 counts were estimated to be worth about $1.7 million and the rapper went to jail for a year because of his tax evasion. When he finally got out in January 2019, he still owed over $2.3 million to the IRS.
It is unclear whether the late rapper settled his debts before his death. Lawyers have informed the public that he did not leave a will and that it has made it very difficult to separate his estate among his many children.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was married to ex-wife Tashera Simmons for 16 years. The couple had four children together, three sons and a daughter, before divorcing in 2012. According to his first divorce, the marriage fell apart because the late rapper had been having multiple affairs and fathering children outside of his marriage.
It is estimated that DMX fathered 10 children while he was married to Tashera. His youngest child was born in 2016 to longtime girlfriend, Desiree Lindstrom.
Desiree Lindstrom recently went to court to be considered the rapper’s “common-law wife,” which would give her control over his estate above the claims of his 15 children. The court denied her claims.
According to the rapper’s estate, which is currently being run by his lawyers, every person who is saying that they are the late rapper’s child will be subjected to a DNA test to prove their paternity.
“The next big thing is to determine who are the rightful heirs. The estate is going to ask everyone to prove paternity through DNA testing. All the legal children of DMX will be entitled to an equal share of his estate,” said Hebert Nass, the trusts and estates attorney for DMX’s three oldest sons who are currently acting as temporary administrators to the estate.
These children aren’t just fighting for control of his current estate, but all future earnings that might come from his music. The most recent claim to the estate came from a Georgia woman named Raven Barmer-Simmons.
