People can’t stop talking about Bad Vegan, the new Netflix show about Sarma Melngailis and Anthony Strangis. Everyone wants to know what happened to the famed vegan chef and her scammer husband. Here’s the latest …

What’s Bad Vegan About?

Bad Vegan tells the true story of Melngailis and Strangis, and the true crime series has been a hit with Netflix watchers. In 2011, Sarma Melngailis was a rising chef in the New York food scene. Her restaurant, Pure Food & Wine, focused on raw vegan food and attracted celebrities like Alec Baldwin, Owen Wilson and Bill Clinton.

The same year, Melngailis met Anthony Strangis on Twitter. The Massachusetts man convinced her to scam her investors, steal from her employees and live a life of crime. In 2012, the pair got married and Melngailis started funneling money from the restaurant and giving it to Strangis. According to the four-episode series, Melngailis believed that if she followed Strangis’ rules, she and her dog would gain immortality and her wildest dreams would come true.

“A few years later the couple, now married and on the lam after stealing nearly $2 million from the restaurant and its staff, are found holed up in a Tennessee motel by law enforcement. Their undoing? A charge made under Fox’s real name, Anthony Strangis, for a Domino’s pizza,” Netflix’s description for the series said.

The series relies heavily on Sarma Melngailis’ 2019 interview with Netflix, which lasted over eight hours.

Where is Sarma Melngailis?

The former vegan chef was arrested in 2016 after police found the couple hiding in a Tennessee motel. She pled guilty to criminal tax fraud, grand larceny, and a scheme to defraud. According to court reports, the couple was originally charged with over 24 counts and could have spent 15 years in prison. Both Melngailis and Strangis were able to get plea deals. So Sarma Melngailis only spent four months at Rikers Island.

Since her time with Strangis, Melngailis has opened up about her experiences and claims that he was abusive and emotionally manipulative.

In a personal blog post, she said, “In 2015, I disappeared for nearly a year, which was also excruciating, and surreal. One day I was arrested, which is what finally brought me back home — or to the city that is my home. It was only at this point that I found out it was all gone, and in fact I no longer had a home. I was charged with a bunch of crimes and eventually, unable to withstand a lengthy and costly trial, I stood and pled guilty to those crimes and then spent four months — the summer of 2017 — at NYC’s Rikers Island jail.”

She filed for divorce from Strangis in 2018. The chef reportedly lives in Harlem, New York, with her dog Leon, who just turned 12.

Sarma Melngailis did get paid for her Bad Vegan Netflix interview, but she said that she gave the money away and was able to pay back her former employees from Pure Food & Wine.

She said, “In my case, however, and at my insistence, the producers made an exception so that I could pay the total amount my former employees were owed — amounts that accrued after my disappearance in 2015. Of all the harm and the many debts resulting from my downfall, this portion weighed heaviest.”

With Strangis’ plea deal, he pled guilty to four counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree. He spent a year in jail with five years’ probation. He also had to pay Pure Food & Wine investors $840,000 in restitution. The con man’s exact location is unknown. He is reportedly serving his probation in Massachusetts, which is his home state.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Danny Chun warned Anthony Strangis during his release from prison that if he violated his probation, he would have to serve five to 15 years in jail for his grand larceny charges. Strangis’ probation is set to end in May 2022.
