Blake Moynes may have joined Bachelorette Katie Thurston’s season to get engaged, but the two have announced their breakup two months after the Bachelorette finale. Following stories of struggles navigating a long-distance relationship, fans are wondering if the distance was just too much of a hurdle for the newly engaged couple.
“It is with mutual love and respect that we have decided to go our separate ways,” Katie Thurston, 30, wrote on Instagram Monday night. “We are so grateful for the moments we shared together and the entire journey that has unfolded this year, but we ultimately have concluded that we are not compatible as life partners.”
“It is the most caring choice for both of us to move forward independently,” she continued. “We ask for kindness and privacy as we both navigate this transition. Both of us will forever want the best for one another and ask you to please support us in our decision.”
Blake Moynes also shared the same statement on his Instagram page, posting a photo of the two of them from the “After the Final Rose” finale.
With the relationship ending so soon after their engagement went public, fans wondered what happened in their long-distance relationship to prompt the couple to split.
Katie moved to San Diego following filming, but Blake Moynes, 29, was still living in Canada as a wildlife manager. A recent work trip, according to Us Weekly, even sent him to Africa for a time.
“We’re figuring it out,” Katie previously said about being long-distance. “This is very new to us still. I’m just focusing on myself, he’s focusing on him, and if we work doing that, great.”
“We need to see each other’s lifestyles and our passions, our interests, and then try to see where our anchor spot will be, where all those things can kind of align and make sense for both of us,” Moynes had said prior to the breakup. “We’re going to jump around for a bit and experience what works best for us.”
With Blake traveling and the two being so far apart, they struggled to make it work because of the distance.
Despite dating both Claire Crawley and Tayshia Adams on their respective seasons of The Bachelorette, Blake Moynes joined Katie’s season a little late, hoping to find something with the former bank manager from Lynnwood, Wa.
Blake was a late favorite to win the series after a Say Anything moment that stole Katie Thurston’s heart.
“I was just happy to leave with him,” Katie said of the engagement at the finale. “I knew that was going to happen no matter what.”
Last month, Blake had come to Katie’s to meet her beloved cat, Tommy, who she said approved of Blake. “They’re vibin,” she said in one video. Back then, Katie said that she “had no doubts” that they would be “getting married,” but that they had to “figure out a few things first.”
“I don’t think people fully understand what it’s like to date someone from another country and the rules behind that and the visas behind that,” she said on an Instagram story. “I think right now, Blake can only be here for 60 days before having to go back to Canada, so we really do have a lot we have to look into — and we just haven’t yet — before we can plan really anything else.”
“Everything we’ve gone through has strengthened our relationship,” she said at the time. “And I’d do it all over again if it meant I’d get to be with him.”
