Emma Kenney, who played Debbie Gallagher on Showtime‘s Shameless, is speaking out about what it was like to work with Emmy Rossum, who played her character’s older sister, Fiona. According to the young actress, Emmy wasn’t very nice to her on set.

Rossum left the show back in 2018 after nine seasons. When she left, the actress said it was because she wanted to move on to other projects. According to Kenney, the set was a much better place after Emmy Rossum left.

“I remember before … her leaving, I’d go to set some days and I’d be very anxious about having a scene with her because if she had a bad day, she made it a bad day for everybody,” Kenney said.

Emma Kenney hasn’t spoken to her former TV sister since she left the show, but she hopes that Rossum is doing well.

Since moving on from Shameless, Emmy Rossum starred in a 2019 Peacock drama series called Angelyne, which was produced by her husband, Sam Esmail. The couple also welcomed a baby girl this year.

She wrote a moving letter after her departure from the show, remembering all the fond times that the cast had shared. The actress wrote, “I can say for certain that this cast and crew, who I’ve been truly honored to work alongside, are world class,” she said in part. “I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

The 22-year-old actress revealed that there was always competition between them on set, even when they were younger. Emma doesn’t know who was creating the feeling of competition, but Emmy Rossum fed into it.

“I felt that dynamic for sure and I never understood it. I was 9 and she was over 10 years older than me, so I’m like, ‘Why is there a weird competition here when I’m not trying to compete?’ I don’t know if it was other people on set creating that, or if it was her creating it, but I know I wasn’t creating it,” said Emma Kenney.

Sometimes, Emmy would really act like Emma’s older sister and give her good advice, much of that advice the 22-year-old took to heart and used later in her life. But Rossum was also known for giving bad advice and the actress believed that her TV sister was going through some personal problems and felt the need to take it out on set staff and fellow actors.

A source close to Emmy said that she is planning on reaching out to her former co-star privately after her on set memories went viral. The former Showtime actress is upset that their relationship is being remembered that way.

“This is not how Emmy remembers their work relationship and friendship,” the source shared. “She’s really surprised and disappointed about this as it’s not the way she remembers her time spent on set and especially with Emma.”

Emma Kenney, who was just 10-years-old when she started playing the role of Debbie, said that she got a lot of good advice from fellow actor Shanola Hampton, who played neighbor Veronica Fisher on the show. The young actress said that she tended to go to Hampton when she had a problem and described the older actress as very sweet.
