Comedian Tiffany Haddish is ready to get engaged to her boyfriend, Common, but the rapper just hasn’t popped the question yet.

Speaking about their relationship on the SmartLess podcast, which has been going on for over a year, Tiffany Haddish candidly told hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that, “I would love for him to always be my friend. If he decides he wants to marry me, cool.”

Asking if he was planning on proposing anytime soon, Haddish said that the two don’t live under the same roof currently, but if he were to propose she would want an apartment over a diamond engagement ring.

“I don’t want a ring, I want an apartment building,” she said. “You know they present you with a ring, I want him to present me with the deed to a duplex or a 36-plex. Present me with an apartment building.”

When Jason Bateman asked if Common was aware that she would rather have an apartment building over an engagement ring, she told him that he told her she was “crazy.”

“I said, ‘No, I’m not crazy. I’m smart,'” she said. “Because a marriage is a union of two businesses and the whole point of coming together is to grow yourselves, but also grow a family and make sure they have something to inherit.”

Tiffany Haddish, 41, and Common, 49, first met on the set of the 2019 film The Kitchen, a film about the wives of Irish mobsters in the late 1970s directed by the Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Andrea Berloff.

They started dating publicly in August 2020, with Tiffany Haddish telling Steve-O on his Wild Ride podcast that it was, “hands down the best relationship I’ve ever been in.”

The couple seem to love talking about their happy relationship on podcasts, as Common also confirmed the relationship that same month on the People podcast. “I’ve evolved and gotten to that place” where “I can love myself” and “evolve,” he said.

He called Tiffany Haddish a “wonderful woman, a queen, and just a beautiful person,” adding that, “I just care for her a lot.”

“I enjoy her, and am grateful to have her in my life,” Common said. “I’m happy.”

The couple also promote each other’s work and are very proud of their communicative relationship. “I listen to what Tiffany would have to say about how she feels about something and just try to understand it instead of always having an answer,” Common told People.

Posting a video of Common rapping his LA Lakers radio freestyle on her Instagram, Tiffany Haddish wrote, “I am so proud of him.”

“This is real hip-hop,” she said. “I Love when a man knows how to use his words.”

With the couple so happily in love, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Common propose soon, especially since Tiffany Haddish seems to have marriage on the brain.

Haddish was previously married to her ex-husband William Stewart, but they were divorced in 2013. Common has never been married, but shares a daughter, Omoye Lynn, 24, with an ex-girlfriend, Kim Jones.

“If you get an apartment building that will increase in value, the children will always be able to go to school,” Haddish continued on the SmartLess podcast, alluding to thoughts of a long future with Common that even included children. “If we get sick or something, we’ll have something to cash out and be able to take care of ourselves.”

“Come at me with a deed, baby, don’t come at me with a ring,” she said. “Because if you’re trying to buy my life and change my last name to your last name, a ring ain’t gonna do it. We can get the ring after you can get the building.”
