Yuhwei Chou, from Skillman, New Jersey, was arrested on Tuesday after N.J. police charged her with the murder of her two children, 7-year-old Samantha Ross and 10-month-old Paul Ross. A motive has yet to be determined for the crime, but the prosecutor is pretty certain that Chou caused the death of her children.
Hillsborough Township Police were called to the scene at around 7:41 a.m. Tuesday after someone found a disabled car stuck in a ditch. In the car they found Yuhwei Chou, 36, and her two children. The children were in the back seat and it appeared that they had been bound and restrained.
The children’s vitals were taken and they were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death for both children is still unknown.
“The Officers observed two children secured in a booster seat and a baby seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Officers observed that the children were bound and restrained. No vital signs were present on the children and they were pronounced deceased at the scene,” said a news release.
The 911 call was made by a tow truck driver who found the car in Somerset County. According to the driver’s father, Robert Long, his son was very distressed when he called him about the car.
“He was shook up. He said he found a lady in the ditch and said he asked her if she was all right and she said no, I think. And then he seen the babies and then he called the cops right away,” said Long.
Police haven’t determined why Yuhwei Chou would kill her two children, but Somerset County prosecutor Michael H. Robertson is pretty certain that she was the cause of their deaths. He claimed that the “investigation has revealed that Yuhwei Chou caused the deaths of her two children.”
Robertson’s office released a statement about the crime and said: “the circumstances leading to the events which caused the deaths of the two children are under investigation by authorities. No motive has been released. An autopsy for the cause and manner of death will be performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office.”
Neighbors of Yuhwei Chou are shocked that the mother of two would murder her children and they are trying to understand what happened. Apparently, they had seen police at the Chou house many times.
“Over the years, I had seen some, like, police cars would come occasionally. We never knew what any of that was about,” neighbor Austen Wang-Bailey said. Neighbors said that the family typically kept to themselves.
Many of the neighbors said that they never suspected any sort of abuse in the family and if they had thought anything was wrong with the children they would have stepped up to help. Police have yet to find any signs of abuse. Many neighbors are grieving over the loss of the young children.
“Why did she do that?” neighbor Helen Bailey asked, crying. “I never even saw the little boy. I understand he was a beautiful little boy. The girl, she was a beautiful little girl. The cutest little thing.”
Yuhwei Chou has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. She is scheduled for booking after a medical evaluation from the hospital. It is unknown when she will appear in court or who her representation is. The investigation into the deaths of her children is still ongoing.
